The Anthropology of Taiwanese Society

The Anthropology of Taiwanese Society
By:"Emily M. Ahern","Hill Gates","Joint Committee on Contemporary China"
Published on 1981-01-01 by Stanford University Press

This volume represents the state of the art of anthropology in Taiwan, summing up more than twenty years of fieldwork and publication. It also contains the fullest and best integrated set of anthropological data we have for any region of China, for any period of history. It deals directly with the difficult question that faces China anthropologists - in what sense is Taiwan a part of China? Should Taiwan be primarily described as a natural end product of a long cultural tradition (a Chinese province), or should it be primarily described as a product of external factors (a small, rapidly developing society with the world's densest population, uniquely situated in the world economy)? For other anthropologists, the volume contains data and analysis that pertain to many current problems: the relationship between ethnicity and social class, the role of historical factors in anthropological explanation, the interaction between religious activities and state control, and the interplay between national and local political and economic systems.--Publisher description.

Illuminating How Identities, Stereotypes and Inequalities Matter through Gender Studies

Illuminating How Identities, Stereotypes and Inequalities Matter through Gender Studies
By:"D. Nicole Farris","Mary Ann Davis","D'Lane R. Compton"
Published on 2014-04-30 by Springer Science & Business

This collection highlights and extends contemporary women's and gender studies by presenting theoretical analyses and innovative research conceptualizations, applications and methodologies via a diverse variety of popular-in-the-classroom topics, such as changing masculinities; comedic/dramatic portrayals of ethnicity and discrimination; stigma and differences within mainstream media gender stereotypes; intersections of gendered and sexual identities in social media and fundamental institutions. These topics emphasize relevant issues and nuances within popular culture, identities and perceptions and social problems and illustrate the breadth of gender studies and its applications, while the diverse methodologies like historical comparisons; ethnographic, demographic and statistical analyses, demonstrate its epistemology. Each chapter remains solidly founded in gender theory while making significant innovative contributions to the overall field.

Border Crossings

Border Crossings
By:"Kathleen Sue Fine-Dare"
Published on 2009 by U of Nebraska Press

For anthropologists and social scientists working in North and South America, the past few decades have brought considerable change as issues such as repatriation, cultural jurisdiction, and revitalization movements have swept across the hemisphere. Today scholars are rethinking both how and why they study culture as they gain a new appreciation for the impact they have on the people they study. Key to this reassessment of the social sciences is a rethinking of the concept of borders: not only between cultures and nations but between disciplines such as archaeology and cultural anthropology, between past and present, and between anthropologists and indigenous peoples. \

Transforming Scholarship

Transforming Scholarship
By:"Michele Tracy Berger","Cheryl L Radeloff"
Published on 2014-08-13 by Routledge

Transforming Scholarship is a user-friendly work of practical guidance and inspiration for supporting a student's interest in a Women's Studies degree. Berger and Radeloff use empirical evidence to help students with the major barriers they face when exploring Women's Studies: the negative response a student often faces when announcing to the world that he or she is interested in Women’s Studies; and the perceived lack of employment and career options that supposedly comes with graduating with a Women's Studies degree. This book will support students to think critically about what they know, how to demonstrate what they know, and how to prepare for life both personally and professionally after the degree. Transforming Scholarship is a practical guide for students interested in women’s and gender studies that targets advanced undergraduates who have a firm connection to the discipline. This book is ideal for women’s and gender capstone courses, and for those who have finished their degree and need a resource to assist in conceptualizing the answers to the question \

Social Anthropology

Social Anthropology
By:"Clifford Wilcox"
Published on 2011-12-31 by Transaction Publishers

Robert Redfield is remembered today primarily as an anthropologist, but during his lifetime Redfield's cross-disciplinary activity reflected a strong interest in infusing anthropological practice with sociological theory. Like a handful of other anthropologists, including A.R. Radcliffe-Brown and Bronislaw Malinowski, who shared his interests during the 1920s through 1930s, his works came to define a new subfield known as social anthropology. Redfield was distinct in being one of the first Americans to devote himself seriously to social anthropology, a field dominated initially by British scholars. He spent his career at the University of Chicago, and his anthropology bore the distinct mark of sociology as developed and practiced at that institution. Indeed, Redfield played a major role in defining what has been called the \

Structural Models in Anthropology

Structural Models in Anthropology
By:"Per Hage","Frank Harary"
Published on 1984-02-24 by Cambridge University Press

Hage and Harary present a comprehensive introduction to the use of graph theory in social and cultural anthropology. Using a wide range of empirical examples, the authors illustrate how graph theory can provide a language for expressing in a more exact fashion concepts and notions that can only be imperfectly rendered verbally. They show how graphs, digraphs and networks, together with their associated matrices and duality laws, facilitate the study of such diverse topics as mediation and power in exchange systems, reachability in social networks, efficiency in cognitive schemata, logic in kinship relations, and productivity in subsistence modes. The interaction between graphs and groups provides further means for the analysis of transformations in myths and permutations in symbolic systems. The totality of these structural models aids in the collection as well as the interpretation of field data. The presentation is clear, precise and readily accessible to the nonmathematical reader. It emphasizes the implicit presence of graph theory in much of anthropological thinking.
